I'm 5 episodes into Broadchurch and as I've admitted to several people at this point: I gave up and spoiled myself for the end by the end of ep 3. I couldn't stand the itchy anxiety. The series is very effective at establishing the "Who can you really trust in your life?" theme. Maybe too effective, y'know? Though I have to say when you're establishing suspects, years of Law & Order, choose your flavor, taught me the most obvious suspect, e.g. Elderly Pedophile Newsagent, is not going to be your murderer. More than likely, he'll end up how Jack ended up: dead by suicide because The Media, As Run By Rupert Murdoch, Is Evil.
Olivia Coleman is magic. David Tennant is Very Sad and Bearded. I guess I only find David Tennant mildly sexy when his skulking is demonic.
I'm 3 eps into People of Earth, David Jenkins's first series (exec produced by those slouches Conan O'Brien and Greg Daniels), and it has all the elements I love so much about OFMD PLUS Ana Gasteyer and Brian Huskey! Lovable weirdos making a workable family-type unit! Romance! Sneaky-but-not-so-sneaky exploration of trauma! I'm glad I'm paying for it and putting residuals (Union Strong!) in pockets of creators and performers I love because I have to pay Amazon for the honor of watching it. I had an Amazon gift card thanks to two old Fires I finally sent back to Amazon Grindhouse to turn into other Fires. Now it's gone so I'm going to wait until I've finished S1 of Broadchurch to buy more.
Next Goal Wins is a lot of fun, especially if you have enjoyed many, many underdog sports movies during your 46 years--your Major Leagues, your Karate Kids, your Necessary Roughnesses, your remake of the Bad News Bears, sorry, I never have gotten around to the Matthau and O'Neal original--and genuinely love the genre but also don't mind seeing the Exciting Final Event sequence narrated with mocking love AND in a way that moves the freaking Event along faster than you usually get from said genre. I agree with a lot of what the Pop Culture Happy Hour ep covered--I can't forget who said it, but it's interesting to see the genre applied to a story where the victory is so incremental, the stakes high in being so very low. I think Taika captured that and also pointed out that a white coach coming in to "save" a team of indigenous team is much better told when you point out that the team really doesn't need saving from an oppressive asshole, and it's better if the oppressive asshole learns to embrace the idea of true coaching and leadership. I can enjoy the movie and also say that: I think Michael Fassbender wasn't a great choice for a lead in a comedy. I may mostly be saying that because I find him off-putting, but also, I don't think he has much in the way of comedic timing.
Oh, and are you a critic who is tired of/has personal beef with Taika Waititi? Congratulations! You are the COOLEST person I know. I think you're also probably the same people who wearily gestured with your quill to tell the world you'd had enough of Lin Manuel Miranda and Anne Hathaway. I would now like to tell you about how cool I think you are, especially your desire to be the coolest person at the cool party. Cool job! And I don't know that I'd count myself as a Jojo Rabbit defender, per se, but the critics who still feel it necessary to talk about it like it's still trending on Twitter are the coolest of all!
Is my low-thrumming crush to blame for my defensiveness? Possibly. But also, in all seriousness, I find that particular critical voice so fucking tired. Learn to express your criticism in a way that doesn't seem like you're a bitch-ass at a high school lunch table. Bitch ass.
I ended my Max subscription and sent a pissy note to Maxwell. Sorry, Maxwell! Julia Season 2 shall have to wait! (Possibly forever, we'll see.) I find it so annoying that And Just Like That got autorenewed for 3 seasons, but we have to dick around and wait on the fucking joker who created burner accounts to harass critics who didn't like True Detective to take his thumb out of his ass. Also, I'll admit I was struggling with whether or not to start OFMD from the beginning. It's marvelous to think where it all started... and it felt almost impossible to think about going back and watching bedecked and bedazzled Stede Bonnet from the beginning learn all those hard lessons and become a real boy. I think I need time to marinate in the wonderful possibility of grown-up Stede and Ed Teach sharing that little house by the sea, making it a home.
