Let's All Go To the Movies with Young 'Uns

Things I Experienced as a Cusp Gen Xer Seeing Scream and Scream 2 with People in their Mid- to Late 20s.
Girls/Women behind us at the theater spoke at length about ADHD triggers, both while watching movies and within their lives. Is Tik Tok a doctor? I’m curious.
Someone called out “This movie is racist” at the trailer for The Blair Witch Project. Since my memory of the film largely centers around nostalgia (I saw it at The Uptown! Which isn’t a movie theater anymore! I also saw the MST3K Movie there! And the cast was in attendance!), my anxiety about being lost (I can still conjure the POV camera sweeping over the place they returned after hours of trying to get out of the woods), and, y’know, THE HYPE… I had to Google that. Found a Reddit thread, always a promising sign.
During Scream, when Henry Winkler’s Principal character caresses Sydney’s chin in a fatherly-type gesture, several audience members reacted like he whipped his dick out. (I mean, it wasn’t the coolest move, but come on.)
I forgot there were several Fonzie nods during HW’s scenes, and I have to say: I was the only one who even had a murmur of a giggle about them, yet HW earned murmurs of recognition. Where do 20-somethings know him from?
During Scream, when Sydney said the phrase “sexually anorexic,” several audience members “ooh”ed like she’d said a racial slur.
During Scream 2, when Dewey identifies the killer(s) as “he… or she… or they,” several audience members did kind of an audible “yay.” Oh, young people. Dewey is not woke. Dewey is referring to the fact that there were MULTIPLE killers in the first Scream (and hey, turns out, there were two killers in the sequel too).
I don’t want to be all B3n Shapir0 “I went to a coffee shop to get my small black coffee and I heard two young people talking about being oppressed by wokeness” but… I don’t know, man, I feel like maybe it’s time to find whatever the Gen X version of a media retirement village is. This thought is also brought to you by texting with a RL+online friend who sought me out via text (since I bailed on Xitter) to talk OFMD.
That’s RIGHT… it wasn’t me PROSELYTIZING for once!! Anyway, young people talking about two middle-aged characters is probably always gonna be–wait for it–a trigger for me. What do young people know about the linear march of time? That’s right: nothing.
Also: god, I wish they’d embrace irreverence a little. I think they can do it. I believe the children are our future.
It was so very fun seeing Scream after so long. Wes Craven and Skeet/Matthew really worked in tandem to make sure it was all on the canvas from jump in a way that wasn’t heavy-handed but also didn’t hide anything. Those creeps were fucking creeps from the minute you meet both of them. And Laurie Metcalf–shocker–really goes all in on her Mrs. Voorhees performance. And Scream 2 was good too! Held up! Olyphant was strikingly beautiful and was in that wild pretty dirtbag of his career (see also: Go) thus was a great choice for a killer. RIP Randy, even though on subsequent viewings, the shine kinda comes off Randy. Dewey 4eva though.
